I love group fitness! I have since I was in early high school and I would attend glasses at the club my family belonged to. I used to take step aerobics all the time. Times have changed and so have my workouts, but I still love group fitness for many reasons.
I am currently teaching 5 classes a week. 3 cycle classes and 1 Body Pump class and 1 Cardio Bootcamp class. They are all great for different reasons.
Things I love about being a participant in a Group Ex. class
- You are motivated by the people around you
- You can zone out to a routine you know well or an exercise you are familiar with
- Or you can have to challenge your mind to keep up with the class
- The music is great (if you pick the right class)
- You can try something new with instruction (i.e. kettlebells or cycle)
- You can get a free personal training session if you push yourself and practice good form
- You can learn something that you can take with you
- An instructor usually makes you push yourself harder then you would on your own (at least a good one does).
I could go on.
There are also things I love about being an instructor of group fitness. A lot of them overlap, but in a different way.
Things I love about being an instructor
- You are motivated by the participants
- You push yourself harder because you want to give others a better workout
- You are in charge (we all know I like control)
- You get to make someone’s day better
- You get to help people feel good about themselves
- It’s teaching, and I LOVE teaching (anything from reading to cooking lessons)
- You pick them music (with the help of iTunes top singles)
- You get to motivate people to work harder and to value the time they are spending taking care of themselves.
I could go on with this too.
So my question is, what do you look for in a group fitness class? What type of instructor do you like? What bothers you about a class or an instructor?
LOVE group fitness. I take body pump, cardio/strength, spinning and yoga all at my gym. Body pump in particular pushes me in a way that I would never try on my own. Having a good instructor and good music (especially in spinning and cardio/strength) is key, though!
Love group fitness but always scared to start a new class! I like when the class changes and the same routine is never used more than once. I don’t like it when the instructor makes you count out loud throughout the whole class.
