Thursday night we arrived in BWI airport after a short 45 min. flight from Columbus. We were excited to get to the shore, a 1.5 hour drive from Baltimore. We arrived late and quickly went to sleep so we could wake and get the weekend started!
Friday morning Brady and I went for a 5-mile run around the island. Everyone was getting ready for the fall festival, Tilghman Day, on Saturday. It was a chilly 55 degrees, and the fresh fall ocean air felt great while running! We stopped and chatted with some fisherman while we walked back. After a delicious lunch of homemade creamy crab soup (super easy to make!!). Recipe to follow!
We then went the adorable town of St. Michaels. This town has a very colonial feel and is set right on the water. It is actually known for fooling the British in the Revolutionary War (look it up). In St. Michaels, I found this amazing book on cupcakes, called Hello, Cupcake. It was a NYT best-seller, I am not sure how I missed it! I can’t wait to start baking!
These crabs are amazing! They are salty and spicy and full of flavor. My favorite part is the claw meat because it is easy to get to and extra salty. Brady prefers the lump meat, in the body. We ate until we were full and our hands were covered in little cuts from the shell. Then one more beer and we were ready for bed.
In St. Michaels
After the shopping trip, we picked up ½ bushel of blue crabs (about 40 crabs) for dinner. We went back to the house and had happy hour, beer and crab dip, outside. We stayed outside until our were frozen from the cold beer and the fact it was just 50 degrees, then we headed in to eat!
I had almost forgot that it was my birthday when out came this cute cake!! It had a great strawberry filling!
Saturday we woke up, after 11 hours of sleep, and headed out for a run in the chilly air. It was really windy near the water, but it was so pretty so we toughed it out! At 7:45am, while we were running, we could smell the BBQ cooking and the steamers getting ready for the festivities! We ate a quick breakfast, a bagel with pb and grapes, and then I went for a walk with Brady’s cousin Kristen. By now and it about 9:30 and there were tons of people out and about, many with a beer already in hand. ☺
The plan was to head to the fire station, where everything was happening, at 11 so I made sure to get a shower in before that and then bundled up! At Tilghman Day, you can get anything you want made from crab. Here is what I remember being offered:
• Crab cakes
• Soft crab sandwich
• Crab cake sandwich
• Crab soup
• Steamed crab
• Crab pie (not sure what this was)
• Oyster soup
• Raw oysters
• Fried oysters
• Steamed oysters
• Oyster shooters (a shot of vodka with an oyster and some Tabasco)
• Fried clams
• Fresh lemonade
And who knows what we missed! I had a great tomato based cup of crab soup (my assumption of a recipe to follow) as well as some of the 2 ½ dozen crabs that Brady and his dad were enjoying!
Brady’s Dad enjoying the crab!
We listened to the band for a while before heading back to the house to relax (we were really stressed, can’t you tell!). At the house we made hot cocoa and hung out for a while. Then we went to the playground with Kristen’s son Micah.
For dinner, Saturday night, we made paninnis! Mine included pesto, fresh veggies and veggie-cheese ( I am going to buy this now!)
Saturday night ended beautifully!
looks like a fantastic birthday weekend!!
Such a BEYOND lovely weekend you had!!
Happy Birthday, Ali!
What a wonderful birthday weekend! Cheers to you!! Are those little crab crackers in your crab soup?!? I’ve been studying them, but can’t tell for sure … ha!
