The key to good homemade applesauce is two things: 1. good apples and 2. good spice.

I had both, which made it easy to make a big batch of warm, chunky applesauce with fresh local apples. No sugar required when you use in-season apples. 🙂

Homemade Applesauce

  • 10-12 apples, peeled, cored, and sliced thin
  • 1-2 tsp. apple pie spice (Penzey’s is the best!) or cinnamon
  • 1/2 c. water
  1. Peel, core and slice apples into a large saucepan
  2. Add 1/2 cup water to the apples.
  3. Simmer on med-low for 30-60 minutes until the apples break down and you can stir them into sauce.
  4. Add apple pie spice or cinnamon.
  5. Stir until desired consistency or puree in a blender if you like it smooth.
  6. Serve warm or cold.
