Nancy, from CFP, does in fact have a green thumb! The other day my mom went to work and found this…

Everything fresh from Nancy’s garden!! Along with this there was a bag full of heads of lettuce! You can be sure I enjoyed much of this produce! Now if only I could do this….

So I have been having some troubles in my garden that I was a little ashamed to share. I decided I might as well share and see if anyone can help me.

The problem is I don’t know why some of the plants in my garden are growing out of control. I used an organic plant food called Platitone at the beginning of the planting – a few months ago and I have not put anything on the plants since then.

I think one of the problems is that I didn’t/don’t know when to pick the harvest…Check this out.

Broccoli

To show how tall this broccoli really is, I took a picture of my fence, which comes up to my waist.

Check out the lettuce – romaine, in the background and the huge broccoli plant.

Romaine on the left and butter lettuce on the right. Weird, I know.

What is going on?!

To show that I am not a complete failure, I will show you parts of my garden that are flourishing!

Kale

Zucchini

Peppers

Stoplight tomatoes

More tomatoes

Any ideas for the crazy tall plants?!

 Mary, Mary, quite contrary,

How does your garden grow?

With silver bells, and cockle shells,

And pretty maids all in a row.

I thought this poem was fitting because it was my Nana’s name and she had the best garden of anyone I have ever met. She passed away in February and I am growing my garden in honor of her (I have a feeling she is helping me out

My poem would be more like:

Ali, Ali of the valley,

How does your garden grow?

With broccoli and cucumbers,

And lettuce all in a row.

Here is an update on my garden:

Broccoli

Lettuce

Candy Onions

Peas – sorry about the blurry pic.

I planted more veggies this weekend. They include:

cucumbers

butternut squash

acorn squash

peppers

tomatoes

zucchini

I hope they keep growing!

Anyone have any good gardening advice? I am excited to get my garden started for the year! After lots of garden prep last week we were ready to plant the cold soil plants. In Ohio, most things need to wait until mid-May to go into the ground – or so I am told.

So I bought:

kale

romaine lettuce

peas

broccoli

sweet onions

Does anyone have any great ideas for getting these to grow and so we can stock our fridge with fresh, organic garden produce this summer?!
