Family traditions are the best. They include everything from football games to ski-trips, races to rib-cook offs, and chocolate cake to homemade apple pie.

In our family apple pie is a major tradition. On both my mom and dad’s side of the family, my grandma’s made the best apple pie. Now everyone works hard to carry on the tradition, and get it right.

Delicious Apple Pie

  • 1 pie crust – store bought or homemade – my grandma still makes her crust from scratch but I am not that good of a baker to compete.
  • 8 apples – McIntosh apples, peeled, cored and sliced
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 3/4 c. sugar
  • 1 stick butter, melted
  • 3/4 flour
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon

For the pie:

  1. Peel, core and slice apples into thin pieces.
  2. Mix apples with water, sugar and cinnamon (1/2 c. + 1t cinnamon)
  3. Pour sugared apples into a pie crust.
  4. In a separate bowl, mix butter, sugar and flour – this mixture will turn into a crumb topping
  5. Cover the apples with crumb topping.
  6. Bake at 400* for 15 minutes then lower the oven temp for 45 at 315*.
  7. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream.

We shared this family tradition for my birthday last night and I can’t wait to make it again for friends!
