This happens to lettuce no matter what but happens more quickly if you don't keep it "pinched down" by picking the leaves often. The broccoli could have bolted due to weather conditions, did you plant it from seed or from seedlings? Don't feel bad, it looks like your garden is doing great! This means they turn pretty bitter and are not very yummy to eat. Lettuce turns to seed when it gets too hot. I would pull them...I think you might have waited too long to pick! I'm sorry, that is such a bummer! I just had to pull up my lettuces too, but plan to plant more the fall when it cools down a bit. Hope that helps!
