I know how to grow 'em, (but not pick them)!

So I have been having some troubles in my garden that I was a little ashamed to share. I decided I might as well share and see if anyone can help me.

The problem is I don’t know why some of the plants in my garden are growing out of control. I used an organic plant food called Platitone at the beginning of the planting – a few months ago and I have not put anything on the plants since then.

I think one of the problems is that I didn’t/don’t know when to pick the harvest…Check this out.

Broccoli

To show how tall this broccoli really is, I took a picture of my fence, which comes up to my waist.

Check out the lettuce – romaine, in the background and the huge broccoli plant.

Romaine on the left and butter lettuce on the right. Weird, I know.

What is going on?!

To show that I am not a complete failure, I will show you parts of my garden that are flourishing!

The lettuce and broccoli have gone to seed, I think. This means they turn pretty bitter and are not very yummy to eat. Lettuce turns to seed when it gets too hot. I would pull them…I think you might have waited too long to pick! I’m sorry, that is such a bummer! I just had to pull up my lettuces too, but plan to plant more the fall when it cools down a bit. Hope that helps!

  • Suffice to say your lettuce(s) are out of control. Should’ve picked them a while ago, oh well. Pick them and eat them and see how they are I guess?

  • Your broccoli and lettuce have “bolted” meaning they have gone to seed. This happens to lettuce no matter what but happens more quickly if you don’t keep it “pinched down” by picking the leaves often. The broccoli could have bolted due to weather conditions, did you plant it from seed or from seedlings? Don’t feel bad, it looks like your garden is doing great!
